- ST 2022-7 redundancy, PTP timing, NMOS support and REST API control are relevant considerations for managed IP-media deployments.
- Installers should verify operating mode, SFP choices, network design, timing architecture and licensing or option requirements before specifying the unit.
AJA expands its FS processing line into hybrid IP video
AJA Video Systems introduced the FS8 on September 1, 2026, positioning the new unit as a high-density video and audio processor for broadcast, production and professional AV systems that must accommodate both SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 media transport. The FS8 extends the company’s FS frame-synchronizer family with native ST 2110 workflow support in a 1RU chassis.
The design brings several functions that might otherwise be distributed among frame synchronizers, format converters, audio processors and SDI/IP gateways into one platform. AJA lists frame synchronization, up/down/cross-conversion, frame-rate conversion, HDR and SDR processing, color-management tools, audio routing and delay management among the available functions.
Four UHD or eight HD processing channels
FS8 provides eight independent HD video-processing channels, with capacity for up to four UHD channels. According to AJA, the video-processing resources can be fed by as many as 16 12G-SDI inputs or by ST 2110-20 inputs supporting up to eight HD streams or four UHD streams, depending on the operating mode and configuration.
For SDI infrastructure, the unit includes eight 12G-SDI BNC inputs and outputs. Additional SDI connectivity is available through optional SDI SFP interfaces, which can be specified for optical or HD-BNC use. This flexibility is significant for facilities retaining coaxial SDI routing while extending signals over fiber or connecting to an IP media network.
AJA describes full input and output routing, allowing assigned ports to be mapped to available processing channels. For integrators, that means channel-count planning should include not only the number of sources but also whether those sources require conversion, frame synchronization, gateway operation or a combination of those tasks.
ST 2110 features target managed production networks
On the IP side, FS8 has four SFP28 cages that accept optional 10GbE or 25GbE interfaces. AJA specifies support for SMPTE ST 2110-10, -20, -21, -30 and -40 for system, video, traffic-shaping, audio and ancillary-data workflows. The product also supports PTP-based timing and NMOS discovery, registration and control functions listed as IS-04 v1.3 and IS-05 v1.1.
The four SFP28 interfaces are arranged as two pairs for ST 2022-7 redundant operation. This can be useful where a production system is designed with separate network paths to maintain media transport if one path fails. Redundancy at the endpoint, however, does not remove the need to engineer diverse network paths, correctly configured switches and an appropriate PTP timing design.
FS8 can be used as an SDI-to-IP or IP-to-SDI gateway alongside its processing functions. In a hybrid deployment, that creates a way to synchronize and condition incoming signals before delivering them into SDI or ST 2110 destinations. Procurement teams should confirm bandwidth requirements for the intended HD or UHD formats, especially when selecting 10GbE versus 25GbE optics and switch ports.
Expanded audio routing and timing controls
AJA lists embedded SDI, ST 2110-30, Dante and MADI as audio sources and destinations, with a 459-by-448 mono audio matrix. The audio feature set includes routing, conversion, level adjustment, delay and sample-rate conversion. Such capabilities may help reduce separate audio-grooming equipment where audio sources are split among conventional SDI, IP media and dedicated audio-network connections.
The unit supports configurable video delay of up to 60 frames in HD and 30 frames in UHD, plus up to 2.5 seconds of audio delay. It also includes an ultra-low-latency video mode that AJA specifies as less than half a video frame. Genlock options include PTP, analog blackburst and tri-level reference, and the product includes a configurable analog reference output.
A browser-based node-oriented interface provides video preview and audio metering. AJA also lists a REST API with OpenAPI implementation, which could be relevant for control-system programmers and operators seeking to incorporate FS8 status and configuration into broader facility-control workflows.
What to confirm before specifying FS8
FS8 is most relevant when a project needs to bridge 12G-SDI and ST 2110 while maintaining predictable signal timing and carrying out multiple video or audio adjustments in a compact rack footprint. Potential applications include production trucks, flypacks, broadcast control rooms, studios, live venues and remote-production systems.
Before deployment, engineering teams should establish the required operating mode; the anticipated mix of BNC, optical-SDI and ST 2110 connections; the need for optional SFP modules; and the format, timing and redundancy architecture. They should also validate downstream compatibility for PTP, NMOS and Dante where those services are part of the design. Those decisions will determine whether the platform’s channel capacity and interface mix align with the actual workflow rather than only the headline maximums.
AJA said FS8 will be shown at IBC 2026 in Amsterdam from September 11 through September 14. The announcement provides a verified launch date of September 1, 2026, while buyers should obtain current availability, option and support details from AJA or an authorized channel partner before finalizing a purchase.
