Power over Ethernet (PoE) lets compatible equipment carry network data and electrical power over the same Ethernet cable. For a security camera installation, it can eliminate the need for a separate power outlet beside each camera and make power management easier. It still requires careful matching of the camera, power source, and cabling.

What supplies the power?

The power source is called power sourcing equipment, or PSE. It may be a PoE switch, an injector placed between a non-PoE network port and the camera, or compatible built-in PoE ports on a recorder. The camera is the powered device, or PD.

A PoE switch can serve several cameras when it has enough compatible powered ports, sufficient total power, and an appropriate network connection to the recorder. An injector is useful when adding power to a particular link. A router is not inherently a PoE power supply, and an ordinary Ethernet port does not become PoE simply because its connector fits.

Standards-based PoE and passive power are different

Standards-based PoE equipment uses detection and classification processes to establish compatible power delivery. Passive injectors may apply voltage without that negotiation. Mixing incompatible passive equipment with a camera can cause damage.

Read the camera's exact power specification and the source's supported standard, type, and class. Do not assume that every product advertised as “PoE,” “high power,” or “PoE++” is interchangeable. Proprietary modes and vendor-specific requirements must be checked separately.

Match both the port and the total power budget

IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt cover different power capabilities. Familiar reference points for the first two are 15.4 W at the source for Type 1 and 30 W at the source for Type 2; the corresponding power available at the powered device is lower because the cable consumes some power. Higher-power installations need a compatible source and camera, not merely an adapter with a larger wattage printed on it.

Per-port capabilityEach port must support the individual camera's required PoE type/class and operating demands.
Total PoE budgetThe switch must support the combined allocation for all powered devices, allowing for its own power-management rules.
Maximum versus typical consumptionA daytime average may exclude infrared lighting, heaters, or other functions that increase demand.
Power-supply configurationThe available switch budget can depend on which supply is fitted and how the device is configured.
Future devicesUnused network ports do not automatically mean unused PoE capacity.

For an illustrative first estimate, six cameras listed at a maximum 10 W each represent 60 W of device demand. That is not sufficient by itself to specify a 60 W switch: allow for the source's allocation method, cabling losses where applicable, other connected devices, and appropriate headroom. Confirm the complete combination with the equipment documentation.

Axis's power-consumption guidance explains why typical and maximum camera power should be distinguished.

Use suitable cabling and respect the channel design

A standard copper Ethernet channel is generally planned around a maximum of 100 meters, approximately 328 feet, including the relevant cable segments and connections. The equipment specification, cable category, workmanship, and installation conditions still matter. Longer runs require a deliberately designed solution, such as suitable extenders or fiber with power provided at the remote location.

Use cable and connectors rated for the intended data speed, power, and environment. Do not build a new installation around a claim that PoE always needs only four conductors. Ethernet cabling normally provides four twisted pairs—eight conductors—and the requirements vary with the Ethernet and PoE implementation. All required pairs must be properly terminated and tested.

Outdoor connections need appropriate weather protection and installation practices. Low-voltage power does not mean that grounding, surge exposure, cable protection, and equipment instructions can be ignored.

Plan the data path separately from the power path

A switch can have adequate power yet an undersized uplink to the recorder. Estimate the combined video traffic on each relevant connection, including playback, secondary streams, and other devices where applicable.

Internet access is not required merely to send video between a camera and a local recorder on a properly configured network. Remote access or cloud services introduce additional network and security requirements. Use the supported access method for the selected system rather than exposing camera ports broadly to the internet.

Benefits and tradeoffs

PoE can simplify cabling, concentrate backup power at a switch or recorder, and support remote port management when the equipment provides it. A managed switch may help diagnose power use and link status or restart an individual device.

Centralization also creates dependencies: a switch or its power supply can affect several cameras. Size any backup-power system for the actual protected load and desired runtime. A PoE-powered camera also remains dependent on the condition of its cable and connectors.

Installation and acceptance checklist

  1. Record each camera's power requirements, planned cable route, and recording destination.
  2. Verify source compatibility, powered-port count, aggregate budget, and uplink capacity.
  3. Install and test the appropriate cabling and protect exposed connections.
  4. Connect cameras using the source's labeled PoE ports or the injector's correct data-and-power output.
  5. Configure credentials, addresses, time synchronization, and recording.
  6. Test with infrared lighting and other high-demand functions operating where possible.
  7. Confirm recorded playback, camera-offline alerts, and recovery after a planned power interruption.

If a camera restarts when infrared lighting turns on, investigate its available power, cable condition, and equipment logs rather than repeatedly resetting it. Start your equipment comparison with מצלמות אבטחה Safsale and verify the exact power and network requirements of the chosen models.
