When is expedited freight worth the premium?

Next-day and priority freight can be expensive, but project delay can cost more. The useful comparison is not standard freight versus expedited freight in isolation; it is freight premium versus the cost of waiting. How do you make that decision?

Identify what the shipment actually unlocks. If one missing part blocks a crew, inspection or commissioning date, expediting can be rational. If the rest of the project cannot use the item yet, paying the premium buys nothing.
Confirm the supplier can tender the freight in time before buying premium service. An overnight label does not help if the order will not leave the warehouse for two days.
