Serialized equipment: capture serial numbers before the shipment disappears into a project

Serial numbers can matter for warranty, licensing, asset tracking and returns. Waiting until equipment is installed makes the record much harder to build. At what point should serials be captured?

Receiving is usually the cleanest point. Match serials to the purchase order and carton before items are distributed to technicians or multiple job locations.
For licensed devices, also record which serial or MAC address was assigned to which location. That saves time when a replacement or support case happens later.
