The Square D Type A thermal overload unit is designed to safeguard motors, controllers, and branch circuit conductors from excessive heating caused by prolonged over currents. It responds to overload conditions based on trip curves, trip in 20 seconds or less, and features a one-piece construction with a small heater winding. Under overload, heat melts a solder, allowing a ratchet wheel to spin free, opening control circuit contacts and motor contacts.
