Safsale Editorial · U.S. Field Guides

The right access-control architecture depends on who administers doors, how quickly permissions must change, and what happens during an outage. Start with those operating decisions before comparing reader designs or mobile credentials.

Map administration and authority

List the people who approve access, issue credentials, handle visitors, and respond to a locked-out employee. For multiple sites, decide whether local managers act independently or a central team controls policy. Define how an urgent revocation reaches every relevant opening and how completion is confirmed.

ApproachQuestion to test
Standalone administrationHow are changes delivered and verified at each opening?
Networked on-premises platformWho maintains the server, backups, and controller communications?
Cloud-managed platformWhat remains available during an internet or service interruption?

Test the actual failure behavior

Do not assume that “cloud” means doors stop working offline, or that “local” guarantees continuity. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the exact controller and configuration. Test previously authorized credentials, new permission changes, event buffering, and recovery after the connection returns.

Door hardware and required emergency operation need their own qualified review. Application availability does not establish safe egress, and a software setting is not a substitute for an approved door design.

Calculate ownership beyond installation

Include subscriptions, credential costs, software upgrades, backup responsibility, service access, and replacement-controller availability. Ask how records can be exported and what happens when the service agreement ends. Document ownership of administrator accounts and recovery credentials.

For HID readers or other products offered through Safsale, verify the exact supported credential technology and host-system compatibility. A shared brand name does not establish an interoperable system. For reader-controller communications, the SIA OSDP overview is a useful reference; confirm implementation details for both endpoints.
