The Square D Type S thermal overload unit is designed to safeguard motors, controllers, and branch circuit conductors from excessive heating caused by prolonged motor over currents. It responds to overload conditions based on trip curves, with a trip time of 20 seconds or less. The device features a one-piece construction where the motor current passes through a small heater winding. Under overload conditions, heat melts a special solder, allowing a ratchet wheel to spin free and open control circuit contacts, thereby disconnecting the motor.
