Safsale Editorial · U.S. Field Guides
A persuasive interview does not show whether a salesperson can identify missing information, avoid an unsupported compatibility claim, or hand off a quote cleanly. A short, structured work sample can reveal those skills when it reflects the actual role and is applied consistently.
Create a fictional customer request
Give each candidate the same brief: a small warehouse needs coverage at a loading dock and access control at one office entrance. Supply a limited product sheet and price list. Deliberately leave out a few details, such as the door hardware, nighttime lighting, and recording-retention objective.
Ask for clarification questions, a provisional scope with assumptions, and a short customer email. Use fictional data and avoid asking candidates to produce unpaid deliverables for a real customer.
| Skill | Observable evidence |
|---|---|
| Discovery | Identifies information needed before selecting equipment |
| Technical judgment | Flags compatibility questions instead of inventing answers |
| Commercial clarity | Separates equipment, services, exclusions, and recurring costs |
| Communication | Gives the customer a clear next step |
Score before discussing impressions
Write scoring anchors in advance. Have reviewers score independently, then compare the evidence behind differences. Do not confuse familiarity with one brand's catalog with the ability to learn and sell responsibly. Provide the same reference materials, time allowance, and relevant accommodations.
Connect selection to onboarding
Use the observed gaps to plan training in discovery, manufacturer documentation, quote review, and escalation to engineering. A new hire should know which statements require verification and who can approve an unusual configuration.
The EEOC's guidance on employment practices explains why selection procedures must be appropriate to the job and applied lawfully. Review the exercise with HR before using it. This example is a suggested assessment format, not a validated employment test.
