General stripped-wire illustration; Ethernet camera cable uses four twisted pairsReliable surveillance starts with reliable connections. A poorly terminated network cable can produce dropped video, intermittent camera power, or a system that works on the bench but fails after installation. Crimping ..

External low-voltage power adapterA camera needs a stable power source that matches its electrical requirements. The right supply depends on voltage, current, the number of devices, cable length, and whether recording must continue during an outage. Choosing by plug shape alone can damage equipment ..

Illustration of cameras and a recording system.Network video surveillance can be organized in several ways. The right architecture depends on how the video will be used, where it must be recorded, how long it must be retained, and what should happen when a connection or component fails. Budget, avai..

Person viewing a home security camera image on a tablet. To view recorded security video, first identify where it is stored. The footage may be on a DVR or NVR, a camera's supported memory card, a recording server, or a cloud service. A USB drive is often an export destination rather than the origina..

Security camera mounted near a building entrance.A security camera can have power and still fail to deliver usable video. It can show a live picture while the recorder saves nothing. It can also record locally while remote viewing is unavailable. To check a system properly, test power, communication..

Concept illustration of a security camera with an illuminated lens; IR is not represented at its true visible brightness.Infrared illumination helps a compatible security camera capture images when visible light is limited. Many cameras control their built-in IR LEDs automatically, but not every cam..

Concept illustration of a network camera and video analytics.Video analytics can run in a camera, on a local recording or analytics server, in a cloud service, or across a combination of those locations. Edge computing places some processing close to the source of the video. In surveillance, that of..

Security cameras installed above a building entrance. The price of a security camera depends on what it must capture and where it will operate. A camera for a small indoor office has different requirements from one watching a loading dock, an unlit perimeter, or a wide parking area. The importance of..

Illustration of a fake security camera.A dummy security camera is a non-recording imitation designed to resemble a working camera. It may make a location appear monitored, but it cannot capture evidence, show a live view, send a genuine video alert, or help review an incident afterward. That distinc..

Monitoring workstation with several surveillance displays.A security camera system needs a display that fits the way people actually use it. A homeowner who checks the driveway occasionally has different requirements from an operator watching a commercial property throughout a shift. Both a televisi..

Operator reviewing surveillance footage on desktop displays.A well-chosen surveillance monitor helps an operator notice activity, read on-screen information, and review incidents without struggling with an unsuitable display. The most useful specifications depend on the camera layout, viewing distan..

Hard disk drive shown with its internal components exposed for illustration.Formatting or initializing a surveillance hard drive prepares it for a particular use and can erase existing recordings. Before proceeding, decide whether you are preparing a new drive for a recorder, troubleshooting an exis..

Concept illustration. Available detection features depend on the camera and software. Motion-triggered recording helps you find important events faster at home, in a store, or in an office. Many IP cameras detect motion based on changes in the video image. For this, you don't need a separate physic..

Power over Ethernet (PoE) lets compatible equipment carry network data and electrical power over the same Ethernet cable. For a security camera installation, it can eliminate the need for a separate power outlet beside each camera and make power management easier. It still requires careful matching..

Bitrate is the amount of encoded data a camera stream produces per second. It affects network traffic and recording storage, but a higher number does not automatically deliver better evidence. Useful footage depends on the entire imaging chain: scene, lens, lighting, exposure, compression, and reco..

A dome camera is a housing style, not a guarantee of image quality or durability. The right choice depends on what you need to see, where the camera will operate, and how its footage will be recorded. For a store entrance, apartment hallway, parking garage, or warehouse aisle, define the task befor..

A surveillance workstation should help an operator spot a problem, review what happened, and respond without fighting a slow computer. For a store, warehouse, apartment building, or office, start with the actual viewing workload. The total number of installed cameras is only part of the picture. A ..
